University Reveals Plans to Move Dudley Students to Lehman Hall

Plans Still Indefinite For Interim Location

Lehman Hall will become the new Dudley House, once the Comptroller's office and other business facilities of the University now in Lehman have been moved to the second half of the new Holyoke Center, the CRIMSON learned yesterday.

The present Dudley House on Dunster St. will be demolished by June 1964 to make way for the rest of the Holyoke Center. The decision to make Lehman Hall the College center for 200 commuting students affiliated with Dudley ends a long debate over the future of the House.

The University has not yet made any decision about the care of Dudley students while the Holyoke Center is actually under construction. If no better arrangements can be made, Dudley men may have to eat lunch at the freshman Union until Lehman is ready for occupancy.

Some officials had hoped the University would be able to buy the Ambassador Hotel on Cambridge St. and use it as temporary headquarters for Dudley House, the Russian Research Center, and other offices in buildings scheduled for demolition.

Will Not Sell

But Walter A. Gulserian, owner of the hotel, said yesterday that "rumors of a possible sale have been prevalent for a long time," and that "at present, the owners have no intention of giving up the Ambassador."

The eventual move to Lehman Hall will consolidate all of Dudley's facilities for the first time in many years. The House now has offices in both the Dunster St. building and in Apley Court.

University officials consider Lehman an ideal building for Dudley and do not expect to make any structural changes. The large central room now occupied by rows and rows of secretaries will be converted into the House dining hall.

Offices on First Floor

The large Georgian building in the southwest corner of the Yard has several offices with fireplaces on the first floor for use by the Master, Senior Tutor, and other members of the staff.

Delmar Leighton '19, Master of Dudley House, said yesterday that Lehman Hall "is a good choice, but not the best I can think of." Leighton has been opposed to the Lehman location in the past because "the building is located too close to the traffic in Harvard Square."

Leighton would have preferred to move Dudley's facilities to Claverly Hall, but the University does not consider that location feasible.
