University and Harvard Student Agencies officials disclosed yesterday that a new HSA linen depot in Matthews Hall was constructed over the summer by Buildings and Grounds crews with University funds.
A department spokesman said that the remodeling was financed from the maintenance reserve fund. The cost of the project was not immediately available.
"It was an extensive remodeling," reported John Connors, supervisor of housing and caretaking. "We even gave them pastel shades."
"You should take a look at it," exclaimed HSA linen manager Bradlee T. Howe '63. "It's really nice."
The Matthews dopot also includes a laundry room, replacing one located last year in Grays Hall, and a study room.
Despite the new facility, the HSA has reduced the number of freshman depots from the six used during its first year of depot operation last year to three.
Matthews serves 500 freshmen in the south portion of the yard; another depot in Holworthy handles 350 freshmen in the north half, and a third in Greenough serves the Union dorms.
The last two were in service last year and also included laundry rooms, but were remodeled during the summer, according to HSA director Dustin M. Burke '52.
The smaller depot system lacks laundry pick-up and delivery. Both the Ceop and Gold Coast Valeteria, which operated from depots when they were instituted last fall, have returned to door-to-door service.
"We're not unhappy to see the change," remarked a Gold Coast spokesman. In a study released last April, over 70 per cent of the class of 1965 indicated that they disliked depot laundry service.
Holworthy and Matthews depots are open eight hours per week, and Greenough's four. "But," said manager Howe, "we haven't had any lines yet. Freshmen tend to form lines, so we've got two guys in every depot until we've finished a study to see how many are needed."
As for new depots elsewhere in the University, Conners claimed "we don't plan anything yet." "That's up to the Masters," added Burke.
