The University may reimburse the City of Cambridge for the services of municipal police in controlling last week's riots, a reliable source said yesterday.
Reportedly, the Administration requested police aid on Friday night in anticipation of another riot after two nights of demonstrations against the change from Latin to English on diplomas. It is reported that the University has offered to pay the City for Friday night's overtime work of Cambridge law officers.
Although the local police force has a reserve fund for officers serving overtime (as at riots), at times in the past the budget allotment in this area has proven inadequate. Under these circumstances, it has sometimes been University practice to step in and reimburse Cambridge police on duty at Harvard disturbances.
Although the University has no definite policy on such matters, allegedly it has usually offered to pay when Harvard itself has asked for assistance.
