The schedule says that the varsity lacrosse team has a game with Middlebury here today at 3 p.m., but Crimson players already look past the prospect of an easy afternoon to Saturday's contest with Yale. One starter characterized today's game as a "competitive practice."
With his eye on Yale, Crimson coach Bruce Munro will be testing a new attack formation calculated to keep the opposition defense from double-teaming Harvard's high-scoring attack by feeding the midfield.
No one knows much about Middlebury's lacrosse, "but they are no Yale or Princeton," according to Munro. Despite injuries to key players, Harvard is expected to walk all over Middlebury "but," Munro warned, "complacency could make them giants."
Munro will be careful with his fragile team this afternoon to avoid further injuries before Yale. He definitely will not play injured attackman Dave Bohn, who seems set to be New England's individual high scorer even if he sees no more action this year.
Harvard's most recent casualty, Grady Watts, who aggravated a rib injury in Saturday's Dartmouth game, probably will not play on a full-time basis, Munro reported, and midfielder Gil Bamford and goalie Gil Leaf will see limited action at most. Bamford has been out since the Princeton game, while Leaf, also injured at Princeton, turned in a fine but abbreviated performance against Dartmouth.
