Golfers Defeat Tufts, Fall to Amherst, 4-3

The Crimson golf team suffered a 4-3 opening loss against Amherst but easily defeated Tufts, 5-2, in a triple meet at the Jeffs' course Saturday.

Captain Fiske Warren, at the number one position, John Livingood, playing at number four, and Herb Wollan, number five, contributed the only Crimson wins against the Jeffs. Bruce Johnstone played his Amherst opponent even for 18 holes and then lost on the 19th when he missed an 18-inch putt.

It was a different story with Tufts however. Warren, at one, Johnstone at three, John Livingood at four, Wellan at five, and Dave Rudnick at seven, all won for the Crimson. Bob Holton, playing in the number two spot, lost a heartbreaker, one up, on the 19th hole.

Harvard's 78 average score for the two matches was low for the day, against Amherst's 79 and Tufts' 81. Crimson captain Warren's 75 was the lowest individual score.

The golf team's next match will be at Princeton, Saturday, in its first Ivy League contest of the season.
