To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
We question both the validity and the truth of Thursday's editorial, "Pronto." It is not valid to reason that since the changes proposed by Mr. Labaree make no real difference to the freshman year they should be initiated as soon as possible. It is not true that the introduction of GSAS section men and tutors would make little difference to the freshmen. The issues here are more complicated than the CRIMSON seems award: do freshmen need more time, a wider concern, and more Tender Loving Care than section men or tutors can ordinarily offer? can the "intellectual level" of the Yard be raised by an administrative change, without building separate dining facilities for each unit, without differentiating the units architecturally?
The CRIMSON's editorial seems to us timely but shallow. R. Carey Mcintosh, James H. Case, III, Assistant Deans of Freshmen.
The editorial said, "It may be difficult to staff the prootoring system with GSAS students--yet surely this is the kind of effort most worth making." It also said, "As a presage of serious experimentation with freshman living arrangements, his suggestion is...encouraging." It concluded, "Labaree's proposal deserves either a trial or a detailed rebuttal."--Ed. Note.
