Springfield Wrestlers Beat Crimson, 17-9; Fencers Triumph

Springfield College came from behind to hand the Crimson wrestling squad its fifth defeat in seven matches at the IAB, but the fencing team meanwhile over-whelmed the University of Connecticut, 16-5, for its fourth win in six starts.

After losing the first three events, the Springfield wrestlers came to life and won the remaining five matches for a 17-9 victory. Captain Nick Estabrook, wrestling in the 137-lb. class, was the last to add to the Harvard scoring column, following victories by teammates Ed Greitzer(123-lb.) and George Doub (130-lb.).

The fencing team had better luck against the undermanned Huskies. Captain Larry Johnson led the Crimson with three wins in three bouts, while several others took two out of three.

Fencing with only six men instead of the usual nine, the UConns were at a distinct disadvantage. Members of the team had to double up in weapons and face the same Harvard opponent several times.

The Crimson had the edge in all three fencing divisions, taking the foil and sabre by 5-4 scores, and the epee by a 6-3 margin.
