The Cambridge City Council inauguration will take place on New Years Day, despite the Massachusetts Blue Laws.
The inauguration is traditionally held on the first Monday in January, which falls this year on Jan. 1 1962. At last week's Council meeting, Alfred E. Vellucci warned that the Blue Laws might make the inauguration ceremony illegal on a holiday, this leaving Cambridge without a government.
During the week, however, Mayor Edward E. Crane '35 received a letter from State Attorney General Edward J. McCormack giving Cambridge permission to hold the inauguration as planned.
"A continued orderly, effective, legal organization of city government without interruption even for a short time is, in my opinion, imperative," said the Attorney General.
McCormack's letter did not, however, give the newly inaugurated Council permission to meet immediately after the ceremonies to elect a City Manager. Thus Cambridge may have to spend most of New Year's Day without a legally appointed Manager to run the affairs of the city.
