The City Election

Saturday, the CRIMSON endorsed seven candidates for the Cambridge City Council. Since that time, considerable question has arisen as to why it omitted the name of G. d'Andelot Belin, and supported the other five endorsees of the Cambridge Civic Association.

In its Saturday editorial, the CRIMSON strongly favored the system of Proportional Representation which for twenty years has given Cambridge truly representative government. It also asserted that, while the CCA has definitely been a force for good government in the city, until recently that organization has reflected the interests of only a narrow portion of Cambridge's population--notably the residents of West Cambridge.

The only reason that the CRIMSON did not include the name of Belin, a qualified man, is that we strongly feel that the election of more than four candidates from western Cambridge would mean an unfavorable proportional representation for the city. We wish to emphasize this point. The four West Cambridge candidates who have received the CRIMSON's endorsement are incumbents, while the fifth, Thomas Coates, lives in East Cambridge.
