After hearing a report from the Undergraduate Athletic Council, the Faculty Committee on Athletics will reconsider its policy prohibiting the varsity hockey team from accepting a possible bid to play in the NCAA tournament.
For the past two years, the Faculty has refused NCAA invitations in protest of alleged abuses of recruiting practices among Midwestern colleges. Each time the Committee has made its ad hoc decision at the end of the season after receiving a definite bid.
Dean Monro, a member of the Committee, said this week that he hoped--and expected--that the Committee would announce a decision on the 1962 tournament before the season starts.
UAC Names Committee
At a meeting this fall of the Faculty group and the Undergraduate Athletic Council, the Faculty directed the UAC to organize its position in favor of the team's participation and report back the first of December.
The UAC has appointed a fact-finding committee of Woodbury; Thomas G. Heintzman '62, hockey representative; Benjamin B. Baker '62, varsity hockey manager and manager's UAC representative; H. Grady Watts '62, lacrosse representative; and John M. Livingood '62, representative of minor sports. The committee has not met yet to decide the nature of its inquiry.
Faculty Promises Hearing
Last year, after denying a second straight NCAA invitation to the hockey team, the Faculty Committee promised undergraduates and players who pressured for an affirmative decision that it would listen to arguments in favor of participation. Faculty members and some undergraduates do not consider this new debate on the subject as a sign that the Faculty has necessarily changed its mind.
Students, alumni, and the local press criticized the timing of the last two Faculty decisions, which came after the team's calibre was known. The Committee said that it felt an early decision--before receiving an actual invitation--would be "presumptuous."
