Dean Watson has officially recognized the Harvard Humanists, dedicated to the needs of "snorting atheists, agnostics, and humanists." The group was organized to help those whose religious beliefs fail to fit the traditional molds.
More than 300 students claimed no religious preference on the PBH registration cards, according to Reinier Beeuwkes III '62-3, president of the Humanists. The Humanists hope to appeal to these by providing opportunities for fellowship, study, and service.
Present membership includes 20 students, among them "non-theists" (the Humanist appellation for atheist); "agnostics with consciences," and "humanists, who emphasize the importance of man."
Although the professed goal of the Humanists "is not proselytizing," their eventual aim is to become a full-fiedged religious organisation, according to Beeuwkes. "Three hundred people might have indicated Humanist, had there been such a choice," he observed.
