Big Ten athletic scholarship and financial aid policies took another step in the direction of outright recruiting last week with a little publicized move at a financial aid officers' conference in the Midwest.
College administrators from all over the country, including two Harvard representatives, heard a Big Ten spokesman announce a decision to waive considerations of need or of academic standing from determinations of virtually all athletic scholarships in the Big Ten. At present, only about half the scholarships in each school are given this way.
Wallace McDonald '44, one of the Harvard delegates, said yesterday that the decision would still have to be approved at higher levels in the Big Ten schools, but he felt it would go through.
The decision is understood to be a reaction against the recruiting invasion of outside colleges in the Big Ten area.
