Watson Cancels Tocsin's Vigil

The Tocsin "yard vigil" protesting U.S. and Soviet nuclear tests has been canceled because of Administration objections.

Members of the proposed demonstration reported yesterday that Dean Watson has denied them permission to use the Yard during class time. The Dean's Office also objected to the short notice which the group had given.

Across the nation, student members of SLATE, which has headquarters in Berkeley, California, are planning similar demonstrations.

An exchange of telegrams between Berkeley and Cambridge stated the group's purpose. "Harvard students hope students everywhere will join in fighting the barbarism and inhumanity of atomic testing."

In their telegram, the Berkeley students said, "We congratulate and support Harvard students who are demonstrating today." The Tocsin protest here is part of a nationwide series of demonstrations.

Berkeley students reported that they were demonstrating under signs which read "For humanity's sake, stop all nuclear tests."

The march to the Watertown Arsenal will still be held; demonstrators will leave the Cambridge Common at 2 p.m. today.
