The Harvard cross country team nosed out a strong Brown team, 25-30, for its third straight victory in what now promises to be an unbeaten season. The Crimson's narrow win was predicted, but a few surprises were needed to bring it off.
Eddie Meehan provided surprise number one merely by running in the race. Sidelined because of a last-minute cold, Meehan decided to participate anyways; he caught the Providence bus just before departure time and ran a strong though sniffling fourth place in the meet.
Bob Knapp and Ed Hamlin pulled off surprises of their own. Neither of the two were highly rated by Brown--Hamlin because he had been slowed by cramps in two previous meets, Knapp because he was known as a middle-distance runner. When Hamlin took third and Knapp took sixth, Brown jaws dropped.
Captain Mark Mullin surprised nobody by turning in a fast second place finish. Dave Farley of Brown came in eight seconds ahead of Mullin to take first place. Brown's John Jones took fifth slot; Brownies Smith, Gunzelman, and Libby were seventh through ninth; and Don Kirkland of Harvard was tenth.
Brown got its revenge by trouncing the Harvard freshman team, 15-47. As expected, a few Yardlings got lost in the dense Providence woods. Some were found.
