The Crimson fencing squad crossed blades unsuccessfully in a close match with Cornell on Saturday. Although Crimson fencers in the sabre division claimed eight of the nine points, the foil team was not up to par and Cornell won, 15-12.
Starting out in very good form, the Crimson sabre men maintained their superiority through the afternoon. Johnny Piel and Lajos Heder both won each of their rounds.
Led by captain Larry Johnson, the foil team failed to spark and reversed sabre scores. They lost every exchange. A member of the team commented, "We were not present-minded and did not adapt well to the Cornell fencers."
Allan Gardner won two epee points and the outcome for the match was undecided until the last rounds, despite enormous foil losses. The Big Red outplayed the Crimson in the epee class, however, to clinch their victory by a narrow margin.
Coach Edo Marion's squad faces Columbia on the IAB strips this Saturday in the last fencing match of the fall term.
