When the varsity swimming team takes to the water at West Point today, it will meet its first major opposition of the season. Despite two outstanding freestyle artists, however, Army will probably not be opposition enough.

In this first Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League contest for both squads, excitement, if any, will come in the sprints and in the 440 freestyle. Against Lehigh last week, Cadet John Sollohub smashed an all-time Point record in the 50.

Hunter vs. Sollohub

Facing Sollohub will probably be Bruce Hunter, the Crimson's answer to any sprinter in the U.S. In his only sprint performance this year, Hunter turned in a :28 victory in the 60, a time indicative of very little, since the event took place in a 20-yard pool.

Sophomore George Mulligan will probably try to retain an unblemished record against Army ace Ben Casani, a standout in both 220 and 440 freestyles.

In their 52-40 conquest of Lehigh last week, the Cadets also showed strength in the 200 breastroke and in the individual medley. Chances are, however, that Crimson captain Bill Schellstede will take care of the breaststroke, while EISL champion Bob Kaufmann and Alen Englesburg should have no trouble in wrapping up the medley.

The varsity swimmers will probably post no outstanding times, and may not tear the Cadets apart, but they will undoubtedly give coach Bill Brooks a nice Christmas present.

With two victories under their belt, and 11 schoolboy all-Americans on the roster, the Yardling swimmers will open tonight's festivities in a bout with the Army Plebes.
