Confusion resulting from the present method of granting Radcliffe freshmen late permissions may necessitate a change in the system, Dean Brown told the Board of Hall Presidents yesterday.
Cliffies are now allowed 80 1 p.m. permissions during their first semester. Without a late permission they must be in the dorms by 10 p.m.; however, the college grants unlimited 11:15 p.m. academic permissions for late seminars and library hours.
Girls have complained that these academic permissions impose needless restrictions and cause confusion as to whether one is being "social" or "academic." For example, a freshman with academic permission cannot leave the library after 10 p.m. for coffee at near by Agassis.
Hall Presidents' Suggestions
Suggestions from the Hall Presidents ranged from simply increasing the number of late permissions to allowing unlimited "one o'clocks." Dean Brown commented that some sort of limitation is necessary to satisfy parents and to encourage freshmen to budget their time.
Most Hall Presidents agreed that a new system should be flexible enough to allow girls to decide freely when to take "one o'clocks," but that it should also stress the importance of academic work.
Opinions of freshmen will be considered next semester when the proposed changes are discussed in more detail. The reason given for this delay was that once freshmen no longer have limitations on their permissions they tend to view the situation differently.
One Hall President attributed the increased pressure for more liberal late permission restrictions to an improvement in the physical appearances of members of the newer Radcliffe classes.
