After three more or less dismal failures the varsity basketball team will make another try for its first Ivy League victory tomorrow night against Dartmouth at 8:30 p.m. in the IAB. In the second game of a home-and-home series, the Crimson will attempt to redeem itself for Wednesday's 66-53 loss to the Big Green.

Surprisingly enough, the varsity may actually succeed. The defeat Wednesday, while decisive, was not the Dartmouth romp nearly everyone had predicted. Even on the impossible Big Green home floor, the Crimson battled the League leaders point for point until the last five minutes.

In the closing minutes, however, Dartmouth unleashed several fast breaks and iced the contest. The varsity must find a way to control the Indians' down-the-floor charges if it is to win tomorrow.

Guard Chuck Kaufman leads the Big Green break, and he can shoot from the outside as well. Kaufman headed the Indian scoring two days ago with 13 points, and his running mate, Walt Sosnowski, contributed 10. Their total of 23 was nearly four times that of Crimson guards Bob Bowditch and Mike Donohue, who combined for six markers.

Forwards Bryant Barnes and Gary Vandeweghe and center George Ramming will complete the Dartmouth lineup. With Bry Danner holding down the center of the Crimson's zone defense, Barnes was the only member of the forward line to break into double figures Wednesday, notching 12 points.

Vandeweghe is 6 ft., 4 in., and Ramming stands a muscular 6 ft., 3 in., but Dartmouth's reserve forwards are the big boys. Dave Farnsworth at 6 ft., 81/2 in., and Dan Berry, at 6 ft., 6 in., can give the Indians complete domination of the backboards.

Still, if Donohue and Bowditch can support forwards Ed Cuffe and Gary Borchard in the scoring department, the Crimson could surprise the Big Green. Loyal football followers may remember that it's been done before.
