Admission to Harvard College

Ideal secondary school preparation for Harvard would include the following:

1. Four years of English with constant training in writing.

2. Four years of mathematics for most students.

3. Four or more years of foreign language study. (It is highly desirable to carry at least one language to the point of reasonable mastery, which means normally through four years of secondary school; two years each of two languages is usually unsatisfactory, since rarely can the student use the language after only two years of study.)

4. Two or more years of history, of which one should be American history and one the history of another country or countries and another time.

5. One or more years of laboratory science. (Prospective physical science or engineering concentrators should carry their mathematics as far as possible in secondary school and take both physics and chemistry if possible.)

6. Some study of art or music or both. --Admission and Scholarship Office
