A recent edition of the Yale Daily News told of the "defending champion Elis" opening their Eastern Intercollegiate League season by blanking Army, 9 to 0. Well, last May 14, coach Jack Barnaby's Crimson varsity defeated Yale, 6 to 3, to win the Eastern League title and will open their defense of that crown against the same Army club on the Soldiers Field courts at 2 p.m. today.
Captain Ned Weld, fresh from a fine victory over M.I.T.'s Raul Karman, will again be at first singles, with Bob Bowditch, Tim Galwey, Fred Vinton, Jorge Lemann, and Bill Wood completing the singles alignment. Jim Cameron, Laurie Pratt, Pete Smith, and Scott Custer will play additional matches not included in the official scoring.
Wood and Lemann defeated Gallwey and Vinton for the second doubles berth and will play behind Weld-Bowditch, unless the varsity sweeps the singles and Barnaby decides to rest his top doubles pairs.

Undefeated in regular season play, the varsity lacrosse team will face its first Ivy League competition against Cornell at Ithaca this afternoon. Last season, the Big Red dealt a crushing blow to the Crimson's Ivy League hopes when they toppled the varsity 7 to 1 in a game Coach Bruce Munro called "one of the sloppiest I have ever seen."
At the three attack position, Coach Munro will alternate Dave Bohn, Andy Leaf, Jerry Pyle, and Nick Lamont. Against Holy Cross, Bohn did not seem to be particularly hampered by the neck injury he sustained in practice Monday.
Charlie Devens, Dick Parks, and Tim Morgan will probably start at midfield, while Lanny Keyes, Ed Tarlov, and Bronnie Thayer will open the game at defense. Guarding the nets will be Chris Stone.
