Renovation in Summer Planned for Two Dorms

Program to Supply Funds

Two Freshman dormitories will be renovated this summer in time for occupancy by the Class of 1963 next Fall. Funds for the modernization of Hollis, Thayer South, and Thayer Middle will come from a $2 million allotment for Freshman dormitories from the Program for Harvard College.

In announcing plans for the renovation yesterday, Edward Reynolds '15, Administative vice-President, said that a number of additional dorms would be modernized over the next several years. Stoughton, Matthews, Grays, and Weld Halls are among the possibilities that the Administration is considering.

Some work may be done during term-time, Reynolds pointed out, but because of difficulties raised by taking Freshman rooms out of circulation most of the work will be confined to summer vacations.

Although the renovated rooms will resemble those recently modernized in Thayer North, Arthur D. Trottenberg '48, Manager of Operating Services, said that a number of additional improvements are contemplated. Among the changes being considered is the installation of couch beds to replace the double-decker type now in many Freshman dormitories.

In addition, each room will be equipped with a new weather-stripped door with a built-in "automatic door-closer." Sound-proofed walls and recessed bookshelves are also among the projected improvements.

Uniform Rates Present Problem

Dean von Stade commented that the modernization program, added to the existing differences among dormitories in the Yard, will present a difficult problem in assigning rooms when the new uniform rent schedule for all Freshman goes into effect next Fall.

He said the created economic cross-section in dorms would outweigh the plan's disadvantages.
