With a man of the calibre of last year's varsity captain Dale Junta paying in the number one position, Freshman tennis coach Corey Wynn is already looking forward to a pleasant season. Jarum Piatigorsky, a high ranking competitor from California junior tournaments, will frustrate opponents throughout the spring with one of the best serves to appear on a Freshman team in recent years.
Piatigorsky who alternates a tricky top spin serve with his vicious cannon ball, has yet to lose a match this spring in intra-squad play. Possessing much match experience, he plays well at the net aided by an extremely sharp volley.
Behind Piatigorsky is Mark Woodbury at number two, who should start in the top slot on most teams. Last year at Andover he managed to take a set from Bob Bowditch, number one on the Crimson varsity this spring. Woodbury is very quick on his feet, and it takes outstanding power to beat him.
Two Massachusetts men, Kal Pollen and Chris Clark, are three and four. Less experienced and lacking the polished ground strokes of the first two, both, however, are hard fighters and move well. Clark has a large reserve of power to draw from when he is able to control his strokes better than at present.
Larry Sobel from Pennsylvania and Jonathan Roosevelt from Washington, D.C., round out the team. They are quite steady, and Sobel, highly ranked in match play. Jim Gordon, Roger Pauley, and Will Crocker give the team added depth.
After only a week of practice on good courts, the team will take on Milton here this afternoon. Wynn has not yet fully decided the doubles combinations but will probably pair Piatigorsky and Pollen at the first position, and below them Woodbury and Roosevelt.
