Baltimore executed a triple play in the fifth inning of its game with Washington yesterday. It was the first opening-game triple play in major league history. Washington, behind Pedro Ramos, won 9 to 2, before 26,850 home fans.
In the other game yesterday, Frank Robinson's two-run homer and Bob Purkey's six-hit pitching sparked Cincinnati to a 4-1 upset over pennant-hopeful Pittsburgh.
Baltimore and Washington will be the only teams idle today, as the rest of the majors open their seasons. In the American League, Boston will play at New York, Chicago at Detroit, and Cleveland at Kansas City.
Over in the National League, Milwaukee will be at Pittsburgh, Los Angeles at Chicago, San Francisco at St. Louis, and Cincinnati at Philadelphia.
