"Considering our victory at the Ivy League Tournament in February, this has been one of our most successful seasons yet," Ronald Simon, Captain of the Rifle Team, said yesterday.
The team finished its play in the Northern Group of the New England College Rifle League Friday, winding up with a 5-3 record. Chief rivals of the Crimson in this League are M.I.T., Maine and Norwich, all of which rank among the top 20 teams in the nation.
Looking of forward to the Greater Boston League tournament on April 18, Simon predicted the team would take second or third place. The Crimson's present record in the Boston league is also 5-3.
Will Garrison, team manager, praised Dick Murphy's shooting highly. "Dick, who was Idaho State Champion while in high school, has scored an average of about 285 of the 300 possible points in each game, and has helped us in almost every match," he said.
Simon, John Phelps and Bill Granik were also praised by Garrison. "Our chief weakness has been lack of depth," he added, whereas "many of the schools we face recruit from large ROTC units." Garrison also pointed to the team's lack of a coach. "Most of the teams we face have coaches, and we suffer from not having the advice and moral support a coach could give."
