The Student Council last night approved the recent report of its Library Committee and took preliminary steps toward the establishment of a used book market in Memorial Hall next fall.
Jonathan D. Reiff '60 presented the Council with a novel plan for a student-run used book mart, designed to save students the reported $150,000 which they annually contribute to local merchants in the form of used book markups.
Stalls in Memorial Hall
Students would "bid for books against each other" at stalls in Memorial Hall designated for specific courses, according to Reiff. Supply and demand alone would determine prices. The plan would "remove the need for organization of any kind," he said. Students wishing to sell books could contact buyers directly.
Even if only 400 showed up from each class, Reiff asserted, the market would be a success. He cautioned that the whole procedure must take place in a very concentrated period of time, i.e., two hours.
The Council voted to establish a committee with Reiff as chairman to publicize an experimental sale next year. Reiff suggested a slogan to the effect of "Keep your books; you can pawn them off on a dumb Freshman in the fall."
Fadiman Appointed
In other business last night, the Council approved the appointment of James Fadiman '60, to replace Jan S. Hartman '60 as chairman of its Drama Committee and heard a preliminary report on plans for an exchange of summer jobs with foreign students.
Edward L. Croman '60, president, termed the approval of the library report "merely formal" since most of the committee's proposals have already been adopted by Lamont officials.
