Dean Brown Opposes Agassiz Study Area

The use of Agassiz theatre as a Harvard-Radcliffe combined study area and coffee shop was opposed recently by Frances R. Bown, Radcliffe Dean of Residence. She labelled the idea unsafe and impractical.

Discussing the safety factor, Dean Brown asserted, "This city is not a place for girls out alone after dark." Since single girls would undoubtedly use the facilities, she said, they would have to be escorted when returning to the Radcliffe Quad late at night.

From the economic standpoint, Dean Brown cited the expense of hiring chaperones and extra janitors, as well as a secretary to watch daily operation. She also claimed that the theatre's architecture is unsuitable for "quiet study."
