Americans Lead Over English Tennis Team

The united Harvard and Boston Tennis and Racquet Club court tennis team yesterday gained an insurmountable 8-3 lead over the Oxford-Cambridge team, previously undefeated on its American tour.

In the day's most exciting match, Roger Tuckerman '59 defeated Oxford's ace, William Gunnery. After losing the first set, 6 to 3, the Englishman rallied to take the second, 6 to 5. Tuckerman pulled out the decisive third set, 6 to 3. Charles Devens '32 defeated Ian Stewart in straight sets, while Hadden Tomes '54 lost the only American match of the day to Englishman Dan Lawrence.

Crimson veteran Edward Harding '58 paired with E. P. Kingsly III to win a close doubles contest from Jan Baily and Jeremy Hogben. In the other doubles event, Devens and Charles Stockton '32 trounced Gunnery and Murray Glover. The remaining doubles matches will be played today.
