Varsity Tennis Team Will Meet Underdog Williams Here Today

Junta Resting for Yale Match

The Crimson tennis squad will face a fairly weak Williams team this afternoon at 2 p.m. on the Soldiers' Field courts. The Ephmen succumbed to the varsity last spring at Williamstown, 6 to 3, and will be lucky to do that well today.

Captain Dale Junta will not play, as he is resting his injured back for the Yale match a week from tomorrow. With Junta out of action, Larry Sears will move up to the number one position. Sears has lost only once in regular season competition and should have little trouble in winning today.

At second singles will be sophomore Tim Gallwey, who has shown tremendous improvement since April. Completing the varsity starting lineup will be Ned Weld, Al Goldman, Fred Vinton, and Bill Wood.

After today's match, the Crimson will travel to Hanover for a contest with Dartmouth tomorrow, and then will return here for matches Friday with Columbia and Saturday with Navy. If the varsity wins all three, the Eastern League title will be decided by the match at New Haven next week.

Coach Jack Barnaby said ysterday that the Crimson should have had a perfect record to date. All three losses came by one point, and were suffered with Junta out of the lineup. "If Junta had been at his peak all season, we would be undefeated," he commented.

Barnaby also disclosed that Junta, Sears, and the winner of a match between Gallwey and Weld later this week will be the Crimson's representatives on this year's Prentice Cup team. The three will be joined by Yale's top trio and will meet a combined Oxford-Cambridge team. Junta was named captain of the U.S. squad.

The Prentice Cup competition is held every two years. This summer, the American team will have the opportunity of traveling to England to defend the cup it has held for several years. In 1956, Junta, then a Sophomore, won almost all his matches to help the Harvard-Yale team sweep the visitors.

As well as competing in the Prentice Cup matches, the Americans will play in several tournaments and travel throughout Great Britain.

The Yardlings have only two contests this week. Tomorrow, they will join the varsity for the trip to Hanover to play the Dartmouth Freshmen. Saturday, the team will play at Milton Academy in final preparation for its big match with Yale next week.
