The Department of Anthropology has instituted several major revisions in its tutorial program, including the reestablishment of honors tutorial for Sophomores and Juniors, Clyde K. M. Kluckhohn, chairman of the Department, announced yesterday.
The changes, which will become effective next year, have been made in accordance with the tutorial report of the Committee on Educational Policy which was recently approved by the Faculty.
Under the new plan, all Anthropology concentrators will participate in Sophomore tutorial, and, if able to meet necessary requirements, will receive more individual instruction in their Junior and Senior years. An examination at the end of the Sophomore year will be one of the major prerequisites for honors placement.
Kluckhohn said last night that "the main bulk" of the tutorial will be carried by permanent members of the Faculty. At present, however, a formal tutorial staff has not been officially named.
Tutorial Discontinued During War
There are approximately 40 Harvard and ten Radcliffe students concentrating in Anthropology this year. Of these, only Seniors now have honors tutorial. Sophomore and Junior instruction was given before World War II, but was discontinued during and after the war.
Course reduction should become a major feature of the new program. Kluckhohn noted that the department "has always been favorably inclined toward towaSrd reduction, and more Juniors will be partaking in the program under the new Faculty ruling."
The CEP proposal, passed by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on May 7, will affect almost every department in the college. It calls for Sophomore Honors tutorial in groups of five or six, with grading at the end of each year.
