The powerful North Carolina tennis squad came to Cambridge expecting to register a victory over the Crimson, but all the Tarheels managed to win yesterday was one singles match. Coach Jack Barnaby said after the triumph that "the boys played really well," and indeed they did.

Captain Dale Junta unexpectedly started at first singles, handily defeating North Carolina's ace, Bob Bortner, 6-4 6-4. Junta wore a corset to help support his injured back, and although he was not playing at his peak, his big game was too good for the Tarheel captain.

In the best-played match of the afternoon, Larry Sears broke a 3-3 deadlock in his third set against Steve Bank to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Sears' accurate passing shots, quick reflexes at the net, and sound strategy carried him to victory.

At third singles, Tim Gallwey turned in another fine performance as he out-hustled and outplayed Geoff Black. The long, three-set match lasted over two hours, and as Black tired near the finish, Gallwey got stronger, winning, 6-2, 8-10, 6-1. It was Black's first loss in ten matches this year.

Ned Weld played his usual steady game in downing Mal Clark 6-1, 6-4. The stocky Junior, playing well despite his back injury of last week, relied mainly on baseline drives and occasional drop shots to take the match.

The other Crimson singles victory was achieved by Fred Vinton over Dick Make-peace at sixth position. Vinton lost the first set, 6-1, but soon warmed to the task as he took the next two, 6-3 and 6-1. Ben Keys scored the only Tarheel triumph, defeating Al Goldman, 10-8, 6-0. In an unofficial match, Bill Wood outfought North Carolina's Walker Lockett, 10-8, 6-2.

Adding insult to injury, the varsity swept the doubles with ease. Gallwey and Vinton won over Bortner and Bank at number one, 6-2, 5-7, 8-6. The newly formed pair of Sears and Weld won at second doubles, crushing Clark and Keys, 6-2, 6-2.

Today, the varsity plays host to a Brown team that is stronger than Brown teams usually are. Even though Junta will not play, however, the Crimson rates a solid favorite in the match.
