After losing their opener to a strong Boston College team last week, the Crimson golfers showed themselves to be very much in the running for top league honors by defeating M.I.T. and Williams, 5-2 and 4-3, at the Oakley Country Club triangulars this Saturday.
At number one, Frank Dodge beat Williams one up, but lost six-five to M.I.T. Perry Driggs shot a one over par 73, defeating Williams 4-3, and M.I.T. 7-6.
In his first varsity match, Bob Brundeman shot a 75 with a two stroke penalty, defeating Williams one-up on the last hole and losing to an M.I.T. opponent, who shot a 210-yard hole-in-one. Number four man Dave Beadie defeated M.I.T. one up and lost, 8-6, to the Williams golfer, who had six birdies in the first 12 holes. Beadie shot a low 75 against B.C. last Tuesday.
Sophomore Watt Tyler defeated Tech 5-4 and Williams one up in 19 holes. He had a birdie three on the extra hole and 79 for the course. Brad Snow took losses from both M.I.T. and Williams, 6-4 and one up. Playing in the last position, Bob David fired a 75 over the tricky Oakley layout, defeating M.I.T. 6-4, and Williams 2-1.
Varsity golf coach Cooney Weiland now faces the task of cutting the 19-man squad to the 13 who can play competitively in the 70's. The qualifying rounds, to be held at Charles River today, will be followed by the Amherst-Tufts triangular match tomorrow.
