A powerful Crimson squash team blanked Wesleyan 9 to 0 yesterday at Hemenway Gymnasium in its first match of the season. The outclassed Cardinals were able to win only two games in the entire contest.
Captain Charlie Hamm began the rout for the varsity, defeating Dennis, Wesleyan's experienced number one man, 3 to 0. Gerry Emmet and Pete Lund, playing easily, followed with 3-1 triumphs over Cardinals Frost and Whitridge. Six straight shutouts then came in quick succession, as Tim Gallwey dispatched Twaddell, Wally Stimpson outclassed Sade, and Fred Vinton, Tony Lake, Kent Allen, and Pete Smith beat Fiske, Arnold, Arndt, and Martin of the Cardinals.
Sophomores Lake and Smith, in their first varsity contests, were singled out for special praise after the match, which the Crimson completed in near-record time, needing only 29 games, two over the limit, to overwhelm the struggling Cardinals.
Army will be the varsity's next opponent, and the Cadets are capable of giving the Crimson a rough time, manager Bob Buellner commented. Army plays a fast, alert game, hitting every shot hard and moving rapidly around the court.
