Edith Chanpin (Geraldine Fitzgerald) has a ambition that her husband, Joe Chanpin (Gary Cooper) would be American president in future and as the first step for its performance she thinks to let him stand as the sub-candidacy.
Ann Chanpin of their daughter, (Diane Versi) falls in love with Charley, trumpeter at the jazz concert and its affair become deeper, she trys to talk over their wedding to her father but he is very busy for the election.
In the meantime, she is at conception and secretly she get married with Charley.
Her parents, however, oppose their wedding by reason of the difference of each position, and of course she is procured artificial abortion, while her father divorce her from charley.
Thus she gets angry and runs away from home for New York. Worse than all, this scandal of Chanpin family prevents Joe from advancing to the politic field, and he determines to give up to stand as a candidate.
Such situation leads him to indulge in drinking, moreover his wife abuses him and confesses her love affair with the governer of Pensilvania 15 years ago.
One day Joe goes for New York to bring her to home who getting a job of a book shop in N.Y. and at her lodging he finds a model girl of her daugher's friend, Miss Kate Drummond (Suzy Parker).
At that night Joe plays with Kate at a theatre or a club and after it he can't forget her, at last he go to N.Y.
And he falls in love with her in spite of difference of their ages, but he also aknowledges the difficuty of their wedding between young and old so that he presents the ruby string to her which was given by Joe's grand father to him and he gives up her unfortunately.
Thus five years have passed away, Joe's sickness become so serious that his attending physician is very anxious of his health going to ruin by alcohol. But his only son Joby Chanpin (Ray Stricklyn) hear at that as news, he calls Ann back home from N.Y. and abuses his mother of indifference for her husband strongly. Be that as it may, Joe has a good time with his son, daughter and wife for a few days but happiness is uncertain.
One day suddenly he is dead.
