City Police Consider Bicycles, Jaywalking

Cambridge police are studying the problem of bicycle traffic in Harvard Square, Chief Daniel J. Brennan disclosed yesterday.

In a letter to the City Council, Brennan also said that an ordinance to control jaywalking "is not authorized by the statute laws of the Commonwealth." Brennan's letter came in response to an order passed by the Council several weeks ago requesting that the Traffic Board consider the problems of jaywalking and bicycle traffic in the Square.

Brennan's communication was sent to the Council's Ordinance Committee. A city ordinance presently requires that Cambridge residents register bicycles and that cyclists obey traffic regulations.

City Councilor Mrs. Cornelia B. Wheeler, who has discussed the matter with Brennan, said that the Police Department considers students as residents and therefore subject to the registration ordinance.
