A plan soon to be studied by the City Council's Ordinance Committee may force the University to redesign part of the proposed Health Center building.
The city's Planning Board has recommended that building lines be established along Mt. Auburn St. from Michael A. Sullivan Sq. to Eliot Sq. to permit eventual widening of the thoroughfare.
Establishment of the lines would not affect any building now in existence, but would prevent further construction within a 65-foot wide strip down the street. Part of the Health Center might have to be set back as much as 25 feet from the present edge of the street.
However, Dean Bundy indicated yesterday that the University would be able to change plans for the Center without too much difficulty, since the designs announced last spring were only preliminary.
The building line recommendation was made early in the summer, but at that time the Council sent it back to the Planning Board for further study. On Monday the Council received additional information on the plan and sent the recommendation to the Ordinance Committee.
The proposed building line also passes through the Lampoon building and the stores along the north side of Mt. Auburn St. from Dunster St. to Eliot Sq., but adoption of the line would not affect these buildings. However, new buildings on any of these sites would have to observe the restriction.
The building line is part of long-range city plans to widen major thoroughfares without necessitating large scale seizures of property.
