The Behavioral Sciences Building, and an adjoining new center for the Graduate School of Education, will be erected along Kirkland St., between the Littauer Center of Public Administration and New Lecture Hall, the CRIMSON learned yesterday.

Three Education School buildings--Lawrence Hall, and Batchelder and Peabody Houses--will be torn down to make room for the new structure, according to Robert T. White, Chairman of the Department of Social Relations.

Architectural planning on the new structures has not begun, but, on the basis of space requirements, White estimates that the Behavioral Sciences Building may rise seven or eight stories, about the height of Quincy House.

Although funds for the Behavioral Sciences structure have not been specifically allocated, the Program for Harvard College lists $4 million as an "objective" to pay for the new building. The Graduate School of Education will finance its center with its own funds.

The Department of Social Relations is anxious to centralize its operations in one building, White said. At present, the Department maintains offices on the second and third floors of Emerson Hall, and has a laboratory on the fourth. In addition, there are other offices and labs in converted houses at 7 Bow St., 5 Divinity Ave., and in the basement of Memorial Hall.

When its new building is finished, the Department will leave Emerson Hall, and make more space available to the crowded Philosophy Department, White said.

The Behavioral Sciences Building will contain offices for the faculty and staff, various laboratories, research areas, and meeting rooms. White also hopes to install some IBM data processing machines, which are used extensively in psychology and social relations research projects.
