Robert J. H. Kiphuth, the coach of Yale's brilliantly successful swimming teams, has announced his retirement. As Eli swimming coach, Kiphuth guided the Elis to 169 consecutive victories.
Kiphuth, who will be 68 in November, was forced to leave his post due to Yale's mandatory retirement age. He has been at Yale since 1914.
The famed authority on swimming and physical fitness was director of athletics at Yale and curator of sporting art until a heart attack in 1949 forced him to retire. Previously, he had been director of the Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
It is likely, according to his son, Delaney Kiphuth, who is director of athletics at Yale, that Kiphuth will remain in New Haven and perhaps serve in an advisory capacity to the new swimming coach, who will be nominated before the Board of Athletic Control on Nov. 5.
After his retirement Kiphuth plans to proceed with work on three books. He also said he would try to maintain his summer swimming program for those preparing for the Olympics and other international competitions.
