Cornell's superiority in the foil gave the Big Red a 19 to 8 win over the visiting Crimson varsity fencing team in the season opener, Saturday.
Bill Trebilcock managed the only individual foil win for the varsity as Cornell took eight of the nine bouts.
The varsity made its best showing of the afternoon in the sabre, losing only 5 to 4, as Mitch Thomas won two of his three bouts. In the epee, Bruce Parker also won two matches, but the other two fencers were able to add only one more win in six matches to give Cornell a 6 to 3 epee advantage.
The rifle team defeated St. Michael's College of Vermont and the University of Vermont in two seperate matches held Saturday.
Ron Simon led the riflemen to a 1393 to 1289 victory over St. Michael's with 284. Team captain Lance Fair followed with 283. Dick Murphy shot 280 out of 300, ahead of Dave Mote with 274 and Bill Garrison with 271.
Against Vermont, Garrison came up to lead the scoring with a 287 in adding up a team total of 1396 to 1348. Murphy came up to second with a 283, followed by John Phelps with 278, Mote with 276, and Simon with 272.
