The varsity wrestling team meets Cornell, the cream of Ivy wrestling, at Ithaca tomorrow afternoon in what shapes up as the toughest meet on the Crimson schedule.
Cornell, defending Ivy Champion, entered four men in the recent Wilkes Tourney, and all four won, to place Cornell second, two points behind powerful Pitt. So far this season, the Big Red has lost only to Lehigh, while shutting out Yale, and overwhelming both Syracuse and Franklin and Marshall, perennially among the East's stronger teams.
Lack of comparable competition may hurt the varsity badly. It has faced only Dartmouth and M.I.T., and although it defeated both teams handily, neither is in a class with Cornell's opponents.
Wilkes Winners
Cornell has three undefeated wrestlers, sophomore Dave Auble at 123, Captain Dick Vincent at 157, and Steve Friedman at 167. Auble and Vincent both won their divisions at Wilkes, while Vincent and Friedman were both runners-up in last spring's Eastern Intercollegiates.
Two other Wilkes winners, Carmen Molino at 130, and heavyweight Dave Dunlop, have absorbed only one loss.
Auble will meet Dave Skeels, while Molino will wrestle Bob Kozol. The varsity's John Watkins, one of the most impressive of the sophomores, will face George Willis at 137. Willis' only loss has been to Lehigh's Joe Gratton, the defending champion.
Noble Favored
Joe Noble will move down from 157 to meet Cornell's Jim Carter at 147. Noble rates the edge in this match on his greater experience. Vincent meets sophomore Orrin Hein, who has exchanged positions with Noble.
Friedman rates a big edge over sophomore Serge McKhann, but Captain Bob Foster, at 177, should offset this against Walker Fillius.
Dunlop meets another of the impressive sophomores, Ted Robbins, in what could be the surprise match of the afternoon.
