The pre-exam push will not hurt the chances of the varsity swimming team when it meets Pennsylvania in its second league meet of the season Saturday night at 8:30 in the I.A.B. pool. Despite the heavy burden of reading period and some winter illnesses, Coach Ulen expects to have little difficulty with the Quakers.
John Hammond, Crimson butterfly swimmer who has shown considerable improvement so far this year, and free-styler Tom Cochran both have post-vacation colds that will sideline them for the Penn meet. Ulen stated that he wanted to save them for later meets.
Ulen commented that "it is quite fortunate to swim against Penn at this time of the year rather than against some stronger team." The Quakers are expected to be better than the weak M.I.T. swimmers, yet not as good as the Army squad, which was defeated by the Crimson, 58 to 28, last month.
Jim Stanley, an exceptionally good breaststroke, Doug McCartney, the second man in the 200-yard conventional breaststroke, Dick Seaton and Konrad Ulbrich in the 220 freestyle, and Frank Gorman, an NCAA diver, should have little trouble placing well against the supposedly weaker Pennsylvania squad.
