NEW YORK, Sept. 29--Thirty nine year-old Ted Williams won his fifth American League batting championship and 36-year-old Stan Musial his seventh National League title today

Williams finished with a .388 average. This was the highest big league mark since Ted hit .406 in 1941.

Musical wound up with a .351 average. This enabled the St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman to tie Rogers Hornsby on the list of all-time NL batting leaders. ship.
