4 Varsity Track Men Reach IC4A New York Finals

Pescosolido, Harpel, Wharton Landau Qualify in N.Y. Meet

Four members of the varsity track team qualified yesterday for the finals of the IC4A meet being held in New York, but Harvard does not have much of a chance to take the meet, which is dominated by powerful Manhattan College and Villanova.

In the hammer throw, Pete Harpel took first place in the qualifying round with a toss of 176 feet, 2 1/2 inches. John DuMoulin did not place among the top six qualifiers.

Captain Dick Wharton qualified in the quarter mile, winning his heat in 49 seconds flat. Carl Pescosolido edged into the finals in the javelin as he tied for sixth place in the qualifying round with a toss of 136 feet 5 1/2 inches.

Joel Landau moved into the finals in the low hurdles, coming in second in the semis with a time of 23.2. He won his heat in the quarter finals with a time of 23.6.

In the half mile, French Anderson failed to qualify for the finals although he ran his semi-final heat in 1:53.8. There were four heats, but only the top two men from each heat made the finals. Anderson's time would have won two of the heats, but he placed third in his own, where the fastest time was 1:52.4.
