Hynek to Visit Iran To Plan Last Station In Satellite Program

J. Allen Hynek, director of the U.S. satellite tracking program, will leave for Teheran next week to determine the site of the last of 12 telescope stations which will track U.S. artificial satellites around the world.

Hynek, who is a visiting lecturer on General Education and assistant director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory here, announced that the first of the special $100,000 Schmidt cameras for the stations are now being completed and that as they are delivered the stations will go into operation.

Hynek heads a staff of 25 scientists and administrative personnel who have been assigned to the tracking program headquarters here. The staff is directing and planning the construction of 12 stations in the United States, Australia, India, South Africa, Spain, the West Indies, Peru, Argentina, and Japan.
