Dave Brignam is expected to be on the mound when the Crimson baseball team plays Navy this afternoon on Soldiers Field at 3 p.m. Varsity coach Norm Shepard will reportedly save Dom Repetto for what should be a harder encounter on Saturday, Boston College, same time and place.
The Crimson, which has dropped Eastern Intercollegiate League games to Columbia and Darmouth, cannot afford to lose any more and must hope for a mistake from E.I.B.L. leaders Yale and Dartmouth. Navy should be unable to keep the varsity from getting back into the win column.
The Midshipmen are rated a little stronger than Army, 6 to 5. Navy lost 5 to 4 to Brown, however, and the Bruins came up on the short end of a 7-1 score when they met the varsity two weeks ago.
In Saturday's meeting with B.C., the varsity, undefeated in Greater Boston League play, will face what has been considered "the team to beat" for the G.B.L. championship. B.C.'s high rating was somewhat shaken several weeks ago when a Brandeis squad that subsequently fell to the Crimson 27 to 8, handed "the team to beat" a 6-1 setback.
Nonetheless, the local nine will almost certainly get its first heavy competition in a G.B.L. that has proved al too easy meat for the veteran Crimson.
In the process of running up big scores against G.B.L. opposition, the varsity has had too little need for the consistency which E.I.B.L. play has demanded. Against Dartmouth, the Crimson infield whipped up four double plays, yet the team gave up four unearned runs.
The Crimson JV crushed B.U., 12 to 1 with a 14-hit attack which included a home run in the fifth by John Kolsti. Byron Johnson went the distance for the JV's giving up seven hits. The lone B.U. score came in the first inning on the JV's only error.
The freshmen will travel to Worcester on Saturday, to meet a Holy Cross squad which should be very tough.
