Track Team Beats Tigers, As Landau, Wharton Star

Princeton's Zwirner Excels

Sophomore Joel Landau and captain Dick Wharton both turned in impressive double victories in the varsity track team's 82 2/3 to 57 1/3 win over Princeton in the Stadium Saturday. But Tiger star Rod Zwirner stole the show in a losing cause.

Twice Zwirner came from behind to defeat Pete Reider by comparatively large margins on his tremendous finishing sprint.

In the mile, Reider passed pace-setter Phil Williams at the 660 mark, with Zwirner nearly ten yards behind in third place. The three entered the final lap neck and neck, but with 220 yards to go Zwirner began his sprint, which opened ground on Reider with every step. Zwirner finished 20 yards ahead of Reider in 4:16.4, a new meet record.

An hour later Zwirner came back to set another meet record in the two-mile. Reider, who had set the pace for most of the race, held a lead of at least 30 yards as Zwirner went into the last lap. Reider began to kick, but on the back-stretch Zwirner opened up a sprint which carried him past Reider at the beginning of the straightaway to win by ten yards in 9:24.3. Dyke Benjamin took third for the varsity.

Earlier, Landau had equalled the Harvard record of 9.8 seconds in the 100-yard dash. His record was disallowed because of a ten-mile per hour wind at his back. Sandy Dodge placed second. Princeton's Bob Brown handed Landau his first hurdles loss of the season, as he lunged across the finish line to win the 120-yard high hurdles in 15.3 seconds.

Later, however, Landau finished the 220-yard low hurdles all alone, as Dave Rosenthal placed second for the varsity, nearly five yards behind.

Wharton withstood a challenge from teammate Jim Cairns to win the 440 by nearly five yards in 49.2 seconds. Al Gordon finished third to give the varsity its lone sweep of the afternoon. Wharton later came back to edge Dodge to win the 220 in 22.1 seconds.

Pete Harpel, who had won the hammer throw at the Penn Relays the day before, set a meet record in winning the hammer, with teammate John Du Moulin second. Tony Gianelly and Neil Muncaster placed one-two for the varsity in the discus, while Jim Doty won the shot, with Hank Abbott third. Carl Pescosolido won the javelin, while John deKiewiet took the high jump, with Rosenthal and Craig Muncaster in a three-way tie for third.
