Wrestlers To Seek 1st Yale Win Since '36

Twenty-one years of frustration are centered on this afternoon's Harvard-Yale wrestling match at New Haven, for the varsity last beat the Bulldog in 1936. Today's match will begin at 3 p.m.

This year, both teams have nearly identical records, both having beaten the same opponents, and both having lost to Cornell, Princeton, Brown, and Springfield. In addition, Yale has dropped matches to Lehigh and Army.

Heavy Elis Strong

Yale is strongest in the heavier weights, as is the varsity, while its showings in the light weights has been consistently anemic this season. Much the same can be said for the varsity, which generally finds itself substantially behind by the time it gets to 167.

Coach John O'Donnell will probably send Phil Schrefer against the varsity's Dave Skeels at 123. Skeels has the distinct edge on his inexperienced Yale opponent.

At 130, Bob Hamada is expected to meet the Crimson's Paul Striker, who is still recovering from various injuries. From their records, this shapes up as a close match.

Shift Possible at 137

At 137, O'Donnell will probably send Otis Graham against Bob Crook, although he is toying with the idea of moving captain Phil Hepner down from 147. If he does this, Ted Reese will move up to meet Joe Noble at 147.

Steve Jackson, one of the consistent winners on the Eli squad will meet Jack Eastling at 157, in what appears to be a certain Eli win. Eastling has won only two matches this season.

Foster Favored

But at 167, Eli John Kohr should find undefeated Bob Foster a little too tough, for Foster beat Brown's Lou Winner, who tied with Kohr when the two met earlier in the season.

Pete Wight, at 177, will meet varsity captain Bob Gilmore still smarting from his loss to Brown's John Alexander. The match should be close, but Gilmor must be granted the edge on his greater experience and ability.

Culbert Seeks Upset

Mike Schoettle, just recently off the New Haven sick list, will wrestle heavy-weight against A1 Culbert. Schoettle is a strong wrestler who has compiled a good record so far this season, while Culbert will be seeking his second win in five starts. However, Culbert's improvement in the past few weeks foreshadows a possible Crimson upset.

Yardlings Rated to Win

At 1:30, the Yardlings will seek their fifth win as against their lone 16 to 15 loss to Springfield. Springfield also beat the Yale freshmen, but by a substantially larger margin. Coach Johnny Lee calls the Yale freshmen "better than the Brown freshmen" (whom the Yardlings whipped 27 to 3 last Saturday). He predicted a win for his team.

Lee with wrestle Bob Kozol at 123, with captain John Watkins at 130, Dick Steinzig at 137, John Vernaglia at 147, Serge McKhann at 157, and Steve Weddle at 167. Pete Rogers, denied action against Brown by a Bruin defection, will wrestle at 177, with undeafeated Ted Robbins again at heavyweight
