For two periods in last night's game, a surprised Northeastern hockey team played the heavily-favored varsity sextet on even terms, until, in the last periods, the Crimson scored two goals to pull out a close 5 to 3 victory in the consolation game of the Bean Pot Tourney.

In the final round of the tournament last night, Boston College gave Crimson N.C.A.A. hopes a boost by edging B.U., 5-4, in sudden-death overtime. The win put the Eagles in an open race with B.U. and the varsity for one of the two Eastern N.C.A.A. selections.

Apparently suffering a let-down after its 7 to 0 win over Brown, the varsity rarely showed the awesome offensive power it displayed against the Bruins. With the exception of brief flurries throughout the game, the Huskies led the Crimson 2 to 1 until as late as 7:54 of the second period. Then Bob Cleary took a pass from Bob McVey to tie the game at two-all.

Putting on one of its few bursts of customary play, the varsity tied the score, 1-1, at 1:04 of the second period when Bob McVey converted a pass from Ed Owen to score.

Then Northeastern dumbfounded the crowd and bounced back to regain the lead at 7:27 of that period; Salvucci scored on a pass from Cavanaugh. After Cleary's goal, the varsity moved into the lead for the first time in the game as Lyle Guttu converted passes from Cleary and Paul Kelley at 18:20.

During the last period Kelley scored what proved to be the winning goal, as he faked out Kerr on a pass from Cleary and Guttu at 3:31.

Although Northeastern controlled the puck most of the last period, Dick Reilly finished the Crimson scoring, netting the final goal at 14:17 on a pass from Dick McLaughlin.

Northeastern's Ray Bell completed the scoring when, at 14:49, he converted a pass from Jack O'Connor.
