Boston University yesterday confirmed that it has sold the entire physical plant of Sargent College of Physical Education to Harvard.
Although the CRIMSON reported news of the sale last Dec. 20, only yesterday did President Harold C. Case make the official announcement.
The release increased speculation on what the University would do with the property located the corner of Massachusetts Ave. and Everett St., and adjacent to Harvard's Graduate Center.
At present, three buildings are on the land, including Lenox Hall, a five-story dormitory housing 210 women. There is also a structure at 6 Everett St., housing three gymnasia, four classrooms, a physical therapy clinic, and lounges. The third building is a residential dormitory for seniors at 3 Sacramento St.
Because of its proximity to the Graduate Center, some rumors opened the possibility that the University would construct housing for married students on the property or renovate existing structures for the same purpose. Dean Elder said yesterday, however, that he knew of no plans which involved graduate students.
The University could conceivably use the land for any one of several objectives announced in the "Program for Harvard College," such as a behavioral sciences building, faculty offices, a chemistry building, or, possibly, a theatre.
Immediate use will not be made for any purpose, however, as the University will not take possession until July 1, 1958. In the meantime, Sargent will complete its projected move across the Charles to the B.U. campus.
Although the terms of the sale were not revealed, President Case stated that the amount was sufficient "to meet one third of the cost of the new Sargent facilities."
