It would have been "cruel and unusual punishment" indeed had the varsity swimming team lost to Dartmouth. Yet it was skillful strategy which accounted for the 61-25 margin over the far from trifling team which came down from Hanover Saturday night.
Bill Brooks, coaching for the still ailing Hal Ulen, greatly reduced the scoring effectiveness of Dartmouth's outstanding freestylers, Ernie Drosdick and Bill Bahrenburg, by trumping them at every turn with Crimson captain Chouteau Dyer.
The freshman team met its first collegiate competition and swam its first meet using the long distances against Dartmouth before the varsity meet. The Yardlings made the transition from cake and milk to blackbread and water with a 57-29 victory, which included three individual Harvard freshman records (see summary).
