Polio inoculations will start next Tuesday for all students in the College, University physician Dr. John C. Wells announced yesterday.
"A person who has had polio may be immune to only one of the three types of poliomyelitis virus, so if he wishes certain protection from the disease, vaccination is necessary," Wells stated. The vaccine has proved "highly effective," and the series of three shots provides protection for almost all people.
Last year, 3000 students received at least the first two shots of the series, and should get the final shot. For maximum protection, Wells said that this shot should be delayed seven months to a year after the second vaccination.
The University will give 800 shots free to undergraduates under 20 years of age.
